There are 100s of companies that specialise in insurance, but some of these are specifically aimed at people travelling and taking gap years.

These companies know the appropriate market, are aware of the activities that you might take part in and have dealt with incidents in this area before. Most importantly, shop around, try and visit companies face-to-face or at least deal with them on the phone rather than buying a policy online.

Here are just a few companies to get you started:

Mind the Gap Year - We have worked closely with Mind the Gap Year which specialises in Insurance for travellers and those on gap years. This is no ordinary insurance company. Not only do you get insurance cover, but a host of other benefits as well.

World Nomads - Travel insurance for adventurous travellers. Buy, extend & claim online even after you've left home.

Banner - By providing tailor-made Gap Year travel insurance to suit your needs, Banner and sister company Harrison Beaumont can offer peace of mind so that you are ready to enjoy your adventure. Banner also specialises in Activity travel insurance for the more intrepid explorer - so if you fancy anything from white-water rafting to zorbing, we've got you covered!

Ask questions

If you are going with a holiday, gap year or volunteer company make sure that you ask them the right questions.

Many will offer insurance included in the price, but does this cover you if you decide to leave the programme or trip half way through? Will you be included before and after the programme or trip? Make sure you know exactly when and for what you are covered and, if in any doubt, double check - this is not an area worth taking a risk in.
