In order to get the most out of your travels, it helps to know a little bit about the culture in which you will be travelling.

A bit of local knowledge goes a long way and you will find you are much better received if you are able to speak the basics of the local language. An awareness of the local cultures also helps you to blend in and not become a target for unwanted attention.

Consider the following:

The local way

When spending time as part of a community, visiting local villages or just as a tourist for the day, bear in mind that you are surrounded by people who live there all the time.

So, when taking photos, ask permission. When visiting sites, make sure your attire is appropriate. Where you can, thank them in their local language - it will make all the difference to your overall experience and theirs!

Learn about the cultures and customs, especially what clothes are appropriate, so as to not offend local people. If there are any religious holidays, political elections, important events or dangerous areas, be aware of them. It is useful to know about the local attitude to travellers so that you know what to expect. For example, in some countries it is common for men to hiss, whistle or even spit at women. This is not personal as such and, as a result, it is best not to react and just to ignore it.

The local language

It always helps if you try to learn a little of the local language, even if it is just the basics.

Take a phrase book, which will help. If you plan to spend any period of time in one country it is worth taking a language before you leave. It makes life easier and gives you a chance to do more than you would otherwise be able to do if you didn’t speak the language. You can also download a language for FREE for your ipod or mp3 player from World Nomads.
